Hoppers Crossing

A generation ago Hoppers Crossing was very much a suburban appendage to the town of Werribee but these days the locals reckon the tail is wagging the dog.

The lifestyle of both urban parent and child, however, has seen a dramatic change over the last few years as both Werribee and Hoppers Crossing have become dormitory suburbs for Melbourne commuters.

Still, the glories of the past continue to be reflected in Werribee Park, the extraordinary 140ha country seat developed for the enormously wealthy Chirnside brothers in the 1870s.

The Italianate mansion and surrounding park are open daily to the public. The mansion remains the largest private residence ever built in Victoria while the park embraces the Victorian State Rose Garden, a wildlife reserve, sports facilities, restaurant, kiosk and BBQs.

Built between 1864 and 1877, the mansion was sold by the Chirnside family to the Catholic Church in the 1920s and was used as a Jesuit Seminary for 50 years before the State Government bought the property in 1973.

Werribee"s famed Open Range Zoo and the National Equestrian Centre border Werribee Park.
