Yarraville
With its gift shops, coffee houses and cheek-by-jowl restaurants, the western Melbourne suburb of Yarraville has a distinct village atmosphere anchored by the restored Sun Theatre which incorporates a bookshop and café. Standout examples of Edwardian and Victorian architecture add to Yarraville's charm.
The suburb also gave birth to one of the nation's most historic and enduring bands. The Footscray-Yarraville City Band was formed in 1888 when its ranks bristled with European musicians who arrived in Australia's first large migrant wave. The pressures of the late 1890s depression forced the original group to disband, but it reformed in 1902. Today's band is a compilation of smaller bands from the western suburbs.
Yarraville lies just to the west of the West Gate Bridge crossing of the Yarra River.
