Deer Park

The outer western Melbourne suburb of Deer Park owes its name not to the likelihood of Bambi appearing out of a thicket but for more prosaic reasons.

Seems that back in those days when it was fashionable for the tally-ho brigade to ride down live animals, the Melbourne Hunt Club kept its stock of game deer in these parts.

In stark contrast, Deer Park was also the site for one of the world"s first high-explosives factories. Originally operated by German interests, the plant was eventually taken over by leading Australian explosives and chemical manufacturer and researcher, ICI.

Today Deer Park is a suburb in the largest municipality in Melbourne"s western reaches, the Brimbank City Council which covers 123sq km and is home to 150,000 inhabitants.

There are several protected grassland areas in the region and Deer Park is a half hour drive from Werribee and the astonishing Werribee Park.

The park and its 60-room Italianate mansion were initially part of the private estate of the Chirnside brothers who carved out a pastoral empire in the state's Western District. Now held in trust for the people, the park has extensive grounds embracing a wildlife reserve, restaurant, golf course and tennis courts.
