Spotswood

On the western banks of the Yarra River, where it empties through Hobson's Bay into Port Phillip Bay, and just a couple of kilometres from Melbourne's CBD, Spotswood will lead you to the breathtaking Newport Lakes Reserve.

This extraordinary bushland oasis hides behind a facade of local industry. Reclaimed from an abandoned quarry and transformed into an effective wetland, approximately 11ha of the 33ha site is now home to more than 30 native plant species and a variety of wildlife - including fish, lizards, turtles, and 117 species of birds.

As part of the Hobson Bay municipality, Spotswood is within walking distance of historic Williamstown, the oldest continuous settlement on the shores of Port Phillip.

Spotswood is also home to the absorbing Scienceworks museum. Just a brisk walk from the Spotswood railway station, the museum, which has been built on the Yarra Riverside site of Melbourne"s first sewage plant, presents hands-on technological displays and interactive exhibits. Befitting its place in a city which draws the largest Aussie Rules, cricketing and tennis crowds in Australia, the museum boasts a thoroughly absorbing section devoted to the science of sport.
