Corinella

Perched on the point of a cape overlooking both Phillip and French islands from the eastern shores of Westernport, Corinella is a popular launching pad for fishing forays into Port Phillip Bay.

Boats can be hired from the wharf complex which is adjoined by BBQ-equipped picnic areas. Corinella is just 10 minutes from Phillip Island by boat or road via the bridge between San Remo and Newhaven.

The island, long-time host to the Australian 500cc motor-cycle grand prix, is also home to a large fairy penguin rookery. The penguins spend all day at sea before returning to roost or feed their chicks in the evening. The birds are not distracted by the subdued lighting and visitors can watch from elevated stands and walkways as the penguins make their nightly waddle up the beach.

There is also a colony of fur seals on the south-western tip of the island and the Cowes ferry sweeps inshore to allow passengers a close up of the seals.
