Claremont

The Tasmanian sweet-tooth trail leads 23km north of Hobart to Claremont and the open gates of Cadbury's model factory which produces more chocolate and cocoa than any other plant in the land.

You must book in advance to take the guided tour which includes the chance to stock up on your favourite sweetmeats at discounted prices.

The town on Hobart's northern fringes takes its name from local settler Henry Bilton's Claremont House, which was built in the 1830s and which, in turn, was named in honour of one of the royal homes of England.

Children and the young-at-heart are constantly beating a path to Claremont"s door to drool from the public gallery at Alpenrail, widely acknowledged as the largest and most realistic model train operation in Australia.

The Alpenrail collection includes faithful miniatures of most of the world"s great locomotives and trains and, perhaps the most loved workhorse in children"s literature, Thomas the Tank Engine. Children are often invited to take the Thomas controls.
