Most of Oatlands buildings were constructed in the first half of the 19th century when the town was one of four military posts along the main road linking Tasmania's north and south. It is a distinctive, Heritage-listed town which can boast more Georgian and early colonial buildings than any other Australian centre of comparative size. Indeed, there are 87 significant sandstone buildings in High Street alone whose construction dates back to 1829 when convict labourers completed the court house.. Most of them are now used as cafes and restaurants. Oatlands is flanked by Lake Dulverton, a wildlife sanctuary and source of much of the sandstone which has built the town. These days Oatlands is a service centre for regional sheep and cattle grazing properties and is within comfortable driving distance of the east coast, central highlands and a lakes district in which Sorell and Crescent are highly regarded by trout anglers.
