Ellendale

Ellendale is a friendly stopover between Strahan and Hobart, and a perfect base to experience Mt Field National Park, along with the beautiful Derwent Valley, Lake St Clair, Lake Pedder and the historic towns of the southern midlands.

It is approximately 75 kilometres from Hobart in the Derwent Valley and 35 kilometres from New Norfolk. The area was first explored in 1817 by Robert Jones, after whom the river that flows through the town is named (Jones River).

Settlement started in 1820 when timber getters arrived in the area. The land was heavily timbered and gradually small farms were established after the timber was cleared by hand and horse.

Mixed farming continues today. Anglers can enjoy trout fishing at Lake Meadowbank 10 minutes away.
