Lindisfarne

Perched on the shores of a bay of the same name, Lindisfarne is a picturesque Hobart suburb just eight minutes and a Derwent River crossing from the city centre.

The suburb takes its name from Lindisfarne House, a property built alongside adjoining Rosny in the 1820s with commanding views across the river to Mt Wellington. At one time the suburb was known as Beltana, but, because of confusion with Bellerive, it was renamed Lindisfarne.

The river city of Hobart, of course, is brimming with history. It was founded in 1804 and, after Sydney, is Australia's oldest capital city.

Hobart's soul is anchored in Salamanca Place with its sandstone warehouses and stores that takes the visitor back to the 1830s when whalers, soldiers, petty bureaucrats and carpet-baggers jostled one another. Today the cafes, restaurants and studios that occupy the old warehouses are places for reflection.
