Alphington

An inner-eastern Melbourne suburb, Alphington borders a large recreational and passive green belt which flanks the Yarra on the metropolitan stretch of the river's journey from the ranges to Port Phillip Bay.

Alphington lies largely in the City of Darebin whose 53sqkm are home to almost 135,000 people, making it the largest and most populous municipality in Greater Melbourne. Despite these numbers, the municipality is well endowed in terms open space, including the Darebin Parklands. Centrepiece of the green belt, however, is Bundoora Park which spreads over 180ha of natural bushland. Flanking Darebin Creek, Bundoora embraces Heritage Village, an urban farm, and Mt Cooper, whose lookout sits atop the highest point in Melbourne.

Alphington is also within comfortable driving distance of both the Fairfield and Studley Boat Houses on the Yarra. The suburb straddles the rail line giving direct, comfortable access to the city, while Heidelberg Road and the Eastern Freeway provide a road link to Melbourne's heart. The road east, of course, also leads to the famed wineries of the Yarra Valley.
