Greensborough

Greensborough is a residential suburb of the City of Banyule which is set within the Yarra River catchment in the north-eastern corner of the Melbourne metropolitan region.

The municipality forms an integral part of the regional open space networks of the Yarra and Plenty River valleys which represent an essential recreational and environmental resource of the metropolis.

In earlier times, the municipality"s bushland inspired a group of painters who had a seminal influence on Australian art, the Heidelberg School.

Led by landscape Impressionists Arthur Streeton, Frederick McCubbin and Tom Roberts, the artists began commuting to the area by train in 1888 and setting up camps from which they wandered through the bush making sketches. Urban landscapers such as the designer of Canberra, Walter Burley Griffin, and Alistair Knox, Edna Walling and Ellis Stone also sought inspiration in the area.
