Gladstone Park

The Melbourne suburb of Gladstone Park takes its name from the family which farmed the land until it was sold to a speculator in 1887. The speculator went bottom up, however, and the land was returned to the family and farming continued until another subdivider stepped up in 1954 only to be caught in a Commonwealth Government credit squeeze.

It wasn't until 1966 that residential development began. Today Gladstone Park is an orderly residential suburb whose design dissuades through traffic.

Fifteen kilometres north of the Melbourne CBD, Gladstone Park is bound by Moonee Ponds Creek and the Tullamarine Freeway which flanks Melbourne Airport.

Gladstone Park might be in the midst of Melbourne suburbia, but an escape to the wide open spaces of Greenvale Reservoir Park is only minutes away. Extending over 53ha in the natural basin of Yuroke Creek, Greenvale offers walking trails, well-equipped picnic facilities and free, gas barbecues. The park"s bushland and wetlands are a sanctuary for a variety of birds including rosellas, parrots, hawks, wrens, finches, ducks, egrets and cockatoos.
