Kingsbury

A small residential suburb 12km north-east of the Melbourne CBD, Kingsbury is a place for heroes.

The suburb takes its name from Private Bruce Kingsbury, who volunteered from neighbouring Preston to join the 2/14th Battalion, 21st Brigade of the 7th Division at the beginning of World War II. On August 29, 1942, Kingsbury gave his life to protect his mates from Japanese fire in the action at Isavura in Papua. Private Kingsbury was posthumously awarded Australia's paramount wartime decoration, the Victoria Cross, for his extraordinary gallantry.

Kingsbury is served by two small neighbourhood shopping villages and a larger centre in Plenty Road. Physically, the suburb is dominated by Darebin Creek and expansive Bundora National Park, which flanks the Latrobe University campus.

The university is the fulcrum of an educational, research and health precinct which includes general, psychiatric and rehabilitation hospital centres.
