Neutral Bay

Clinging to a sandstone cliff rising above a harbour bay of the same name, Neutral Bay is a preferred address for thousands of inner Sydney and North Sydney office-workers. And little wonder. Residents share similarly glorious views to those enjoyed by Prime Ministers and Governors-General and their guests at Kirribilli and Admiralty Houses on the other side of the bay and they are only minutes by ferry or bus from their work stations. Just walking the suburb's narrow, winding streets is a delight and the 'main road,' leads down to a park and on Kurraba Point which looks across the harbour to the Opera House. Shanks's pony and regular buses will take you directly to the ferry terminals at Neutral Bay and Kurraba wharves. The area was named by Governor Phillip because the inner North Shore bay was the designated anchorage for all foreign ships entering the harbour. Within walking distance of the Neutral Bay wharf at No 5 Wallaringa Avenue you will find Nutcote, the home in which author and illustrator May Gibbs created those favourite characters of generations of children, Snugglepot, Cuddlpie and the Gumnut Babies.
