Bethania
Bethania, a semi-rural pocket near Beenleigh, halfway between the Gold Coast and Brisbane, was originally a cane farming and dairying area, but is now slowly being converted to residential. It still retains a certain rustic charm, although it is being broken up into smaller holdings.
Just down the road on the banks of the Logan River is the famous Beenleigh Rum Distillery, which has been making that delightfully-potent brew since 1884. The distillery is open to the public on weekdays.
If you and the family are into model trains, don"t miss The Train Place, about 10 minutes out of Beenleigh on the road to Beaudesert.
V8 motor racing fans can catch up with some of the great cars raced by former Bathurst champion and Ford stalwart Dick Johnson at his local racing team headquarters.
It's only a fairly short drive to the theme parks of Dreamworld and Movie World and about 20km to the coast, and to fabled fishing spots like Coomera and Jacobs Well.
