Greenslopes

When it came to naming his land to the south of the fledgling city of Brisbane, German migrant Josef Wecker had to look no further than a hillside of lush lucerne.

The Green Slopes was good enough for Wecker, and the name has stood the test of time.

Despite white settlement, however, the land in this part of Brisbane was obviously very significant for the local Aborigines, who continued to hold corroborees in an area off what is now Logan Road into the 1890s.

In colonial days, Greenslopes was also a refuge for deserting sailors whom shingle- and stump-splitter Svjen Christianson hid out in his Mt Pleasant lair in return for free labour.

Norman Creek runs through this part of Brisbane on its way from its source in the Toohey Forest Park to the point it enters the Brisbane River. A walk along the creek reveals pockets of a disappearing, inner-Brisbane lifestyle with some of the homes backing on to the waterway boasting a boat tethered at the back gate.
