Durack

For many years this suburb in Brisbane's west appeared in the postcode lists under the name of Oxley South. In 1976, however, the boundary umpires sliced off the northern half of Inala and renamed it in honour of one of Queensland's most prominent families - the Duracks.

The family developed nearby Archerfield Station and in 1883 John, Gerald, Patrick and Michael Durack captured the imagination of the nation when they drove 5000 cattle from Queensland, across the Top End to the Ord River in the still-remote Kimberley region of Western Australia.

Things have changed in these parts from the heyday of the Duracks. Grazing land has long since given way to the developers and both Inala and Durack are dormitory suburbs for nearby industrial estates.
