Moorooka
Sandwiched by the Canoe Reach of Brisbane River, the Brisbane golf course, and parkland, Moorooka is a pleasant, long-established, inner-southern suburb, known in its colonial days as Rocky Water Holes. Aborigines claim two meanings for the name - 'ironbark' on account of the natural eucalypt hardwoods which grew in the region, and 'like a nose,' presumably used to describe the bulbous shape cut into the landscape by the sweep of the river. The Indooroopilly and St Lucia golf courses flank the opposite bank of the river and the Brisbane fruit and vegetable markets are in bordering Rocklea. Moorooka's south-eastern boundary is flanked by the huge, green expanse of Toohey Forest Park which stretches from Mt Gravatt to Toohey Mountain. Rich in wildlife, the park is criss-crossed with a network of walking tracks and the uninitiated might be well advised to begin with the free guided walk hosted by the Toohey Forest Protection Society. Visitors wanting to join the weekly walk should muster in the forest carpark on Toohey Road at 7am on any Sunday.
