Sunnybank

Original home of the Yagarabal Aboriginal, Sunnybank was first surveyed by Captain Patrick Logan, founding commandant of the Moreton Bay penal colony.

But white settlement did not begin in this area to Brisbane's south until 1862 when the Gillespie family began farming land in what is now the heart of the modern suburb between Beenleigh and Mains roads.

Linked to Brisbane and the Gold Coast by rail, Sunnybank is also only a few minutes from Mt Gravatt's Garden City which claims to be the largest shopping complex in the southern hemisphere.

Skirting the railway line and station in the heart of the suburb is Les Atkinson Park which embraces 18ha of open space and wetlands. The entire area is attractively landscaped and shaded boardwalks have been built over the lakes to allow visitors to wander among the resident wildlife. The park is also equipped with a skateboard bowl, barbecues and shelters.
