Darra
Named after a Scottish town on the Aberdeen-Banft railway line in Aberdeenshire, Darra was first settled around the time of the outbreak of World War I and from the outset was earmarked as an industrial centre.
Indeed, in association with a paper prepared for the Australian Town Planning Conference in 1919, a detailed plan was tabled outlining a proposal for the "Industrial Garden City of Darra".
At that time, Darra was on the extreme south-west fringe of Brisbane, but the population surge over the last 20 years has seen large housing developments opened through the length of the Brisbane River Valley and beyond.
Darra is in the Richlands Ward of the Brisbane City Council which celebrated the second millennium with a substantial upgrade of the suburb"s central shopping centre which borders the railway station.
