Upper Mount Gravatt

From sheep runs to market gardens, orchards and vineyards to a modern city within a city, Upper Mount Gravatt has travelled a familiar Brisbane path from mid-1850s settlement to the 21st century.

Today, the expansive Mt Gravatt commercial and shopping centre is the hub of a large, integrated, regional mix of suburban homes, parkland and educational institutions.

Mt Gravatt and neighbouring Nathan are administrative and learning seats for one of Australia's largest universities, Griffith, which also has campuses on the Gold Coast, in Logan and in Morningside and Southbank in Brisbane.

The Mt Gravatt and Nathan campuses are on the fringe of the wild-life rich Toohey Forest that dominates a large green belt which runs west from Mt Gravatt to Taragindi. The forest park is criss-crossed with bush tracks which the uninitiated walker might find confusing.

New visitors, in fact, might be better advised to join one of the Toohey Forest Protection Society"s regular, guided Sunday walks. The supervised walks leave from the Toohey Forest car park on Toohey Road at 7am.
