Bayswater

Bayswater, a well-established Perth suburb, about 6km north-east of the CBD, played an important role during World War II when it became the centre of signalling operations in WA. Many homes were taken over for Army use or were pressed into service as billets for the signalmen. For months on end, Bayswater residents lived in fear of a Japanese invasion and there were air raid drills on a daily basis. From Bayswater, it's just a short drive into the heart of one of Australia's most attractive cities, and one of the most isolated cities on earth. Perth lies on the banks of the magnificent, wide Swan River, about 12km inland from the port city of Fremantle. Apart from the river itself, one of the delights of Perth is Kings Park, high on a hill at the edge of the CBD - 400 acres of parkland and natural bush providing panoramic views over the city and the Swan and Canning rivers. The park has many tranquil bushwalks, and in spring it's a joy to join in a wildflower tour.
