Yokine

A pleasant residential suburb, about seven kilometres north of Perth's CBD, Yokine plays host to the delightful Western Australian Golf Club which was originally part of a land grant given to one T. R. C. Walters in 1840.

However, little early development occurred. A group known as Western Australian Golf Limited was identified as the owner of Yokine from at least 1927, and it subdivided a small portion of land near the present golf course. Prior to World War II, the only house in the area was at the eastern end of Royal Street.

A housing boom began in Yokine after the war and much of the area around the golf course was developed by the early 1950s. There was rapid growth in the 1960s and by the late 1970s Yokine was almost completely developed.

Mount Lawley Golf Club, another Perth sporting icon, is on Yokine's south-eastern border. The important wetlands of Herdsman Lake and Lake Monger - both of which are popular recreation areas close to the heart of the city - are within striking distance of Yokine.
