Up in the Darling Ranges, about 30km east of Perth's CBD, Roleystone is a place where you'll enjoy stunning views of hills and valleys draped by fruit trees which has become the region"s symbol as more and more orchardists move into the area.

The big Canning Reservoir, a few kilometres down the road, is a popular cooling-off spot with the locals. The Darling Ranges (Perth people correctly call them "hills") are the rough edge of an ancient - and gigantic - granite outcrop.

Large areas of these hills to the east are still covered with eucalypt forests and the rivers that rise in those forests flow with pristine water. There"s one other reservoir in the hills near Roleystone that doesn"t supply Perth: Mundaring Weir. The water from the weir irrigates a huge area that"s used to grow wheat and flows through a pipeline that ends 550km away in Kalgoorlie.
