East Fremantle

This historic old suburb just east of the port of Fremantle is full of rabid Australian Rules fans and has some lovely old stone homes.

It's just a stroll into one of the most interesting cities in Australia - full of character, history, wonderful architecture, great watering holes and some of Australia's very best eateries.

There's so much to see and do in Fremantle. Make sure you visit the Fremantle Arts Centre, the Fremantle Maritime Museum, and the eerie Fremantle Prison, which operated from 1855 until it was decommissioned in 1991.

And don't miss The Roundhouse, which was built in 1831. It is Western Australia"s oldest public building and was originally a jail. Visitors are welcome to inspect the tiny cells and then escape to the beautiful grassy picnic spot above.

The Fremantle Museum and Arts Centre was once a mental asylum for women and, like Fremantle Prison, is a forbidding place with its own stock of ghost and macabre stories.

All that activity will make you exceedingly hungry, so head down to the waterfront, take a look at the fresh seafood markets, choose a restaurant to your liking and tuck in.
