Kardinya

About 11km inland from Fremantle and 14km or so south of Perth's CBD, the residential suburb of Kardinya has Murdoch University on its south-eastern boundary and the huge Booragoon shopping centre - one of Perth's biggest - just a few kilometres down the road.

Although it seems to have been around for longer, Murdoch University, which occupies 254ha in the heart of Perth"s suburbia, was inaugurated only in 1975 when it enrolled 672 undergraduate students. Today it has more than 11,000 students and 50 professorial staff.

The university was named in honour of Sir Walter Murdoch (1974-1970), a prominent Australian academic and essayist. Sir Walter was Foundation Professor of English (1912-1939) and Chancellor from 1943 until 1948 of the University of Western Australia.

From Kardinya, it's a short journey into the vibrant, historic port city of Fremantle and its dazzling array of historic buildings, fabulous restaurants and swinging bars, pubs and nightclubs. The Kwinana Freeway, to the east of Kardinya, provides locals with fast and easy access into the Perth CBD.
