Rossmoyne

The middle-class, residential Perth suburb of Rossmoyne borders the Canning River, just to the south-east of that waterway"s junction with the majestic Swan River.

The Rossmoyne stretch of the Canning River is characterised by a green belt which flanks both sides of the river presenting locals and visitors with cool and grassy recreational areas that are a perfect picnicking setting.

Rossmoyne is eight minutes by car from Perth's CBD and 15 minutes from the fascinating port city of Fremantle. Perth airport is just five minutes to the north-east and it's just a short trip to the Cannington Central greyhound racing track, the Curtin University of Technology and the Western Australia Technology Park.

Rossmoyne was one of the earliest districts to be settled in WA, which was first sighted by European eyes in October, 1616, when Dutch explorer and navigator Dirk Hartog landed at Shark Bay, north of Perth.

In 1828 the British authorities decided to establish a settlement at the Swan River and on May 2, 1829, Captain Charles Fremantle, in command of HMS Challenger, hoisted the British flag and took possession of the territory. The following month Captain James Stirling arrived on the ship Parmelia with the first settlers, and on August 12, 1829, founded Perth at a site near to the present Town Hall.
