Ashbury

Sandwiched between the older, settled areas of Ashfield and Canterbury, from which it takes its name, the suburb of Ashbury is one of Sydney's inner-western suburbs, some 9km from the city.

Focal point is Peace Park which occupies the highest point of the Canterbury municipality, straddling the corners of three original land grants which were farmed from the mid-1790s. For many years, a large brickworks operated from the park site and tragedy struck in 1938 when two young brothers, Charles and William Dunn, drowned in a pool at the bottom of an abandoned pit.

The disused brickyard was eventually bought by the NSW Government in 1978 and 15 years later Peace Park, which features a ceremonial paved area flanked by trees symbolising international peace and goodwill, was opened.

Canterbury Park adjoins Canterbury Racecourse which hosts the Canterbury Guineas each year, one of the classic races on the Sydney Turf Club calendar.
