Kemps Creek

On the south-western fringes of the City of Liverpool, the residents of Kemps Creek and the neighbouring suburb of Badgerys Creek have been living under the shadow of uncertainty for years as politicians and their batteries of advisers continue to vacillate on whether to build Sydney's second international airport in their corridor.

The first 320 hectare land grant was taken up in 1810 by a young NSW Corps officer and adventurer, Anthony Fenn Kemp, who named his property Mt Vernon - presumably after George Washington's home in Virginia.

A long-established timber-getting, farming, market gardening and fruit growing area, Kemps Creek retains a distinctly rural character.

It is but a short drive from Kemps Creek to one of the Sydney region"s most important waterways and aquatic playgrounds, the Nepean River on which the 2000 Olympics rowing events were held.

There is no better way to explore the river than aboard the Nepean Belle Paddlewheeler or her sister ship Penrith Platypus which cruise into the Nepean Gorge in the foothills to the Blue Mountains. Both craft operate from the boarding jetty in Penrith.
