Petersham

Drive west out of Sydney's CBD along the Parramatta Road, or grab a train or a bus from Central Station, and you'll quickly arrive at Petersham, now a busy multicultural suburb with loads of semi-detached houses sharing crammed streets with commercial and light industrial enterprises.

These days you'll find a variety of international food stores and restaurants out this way, where Sydney's famous used-car strip begins its tortuous journey west.

Along with many of Sydney"s inner suburbs, Petersham is enjoying a new real estate boom as more and more Sydneysiders discover the advantages of living close to the city hub.

Petersham shares opposing Parramatta Road frontages with colourful Leichhardt. The suburb might have been formally named for Friedrich Wilhem Ludwig Leichhardt, the ill-fated Prussian-born explorer who disappeared on his 1848 expedition to cross the continent, but it has long been known as Little Italy on account of the large numbers of post-World War II Italian migrants who gravitated to this inner corner of Sydney bringing with them that familiar baggage of cappuccino, focaccia, tortellini and soccer.
