Greenacre

The lush pastures which gave this suburb its name have long disappeared, buried in the population shift that transformed Greenacre and central Bankstown following the arrival of the first train in 1909.

Indeed, during the peak of the boom between 1920 and 1930, more than 22,000 home sites were created as huge tracts of rural land were subdivided to meet the demand for new houses.

Today Bankstown has one of the highest and most dense populations of any NSW local government area. Former Prime Minister Paul Keating's home 'town' can also lay claim to being the epicentre of multiculturalism.

Recent figures reveal that 47.69 per cent of Bankstown's 160,000 residents can speak a second language other than English.

Bankstown is also home to test cricket"s incomparable Waugh twins, Steve and Mark.
