Hurlstone Park

This small south-western Sydney village, about 10km from the CBD, is typical of the older suburbs of this rapidly-maturing city.

Densely populated and multicultural, Hurlstone Park today is a place of ethnic shops and restaurants. Dozens of languages are spoken on the streets by people whose skin colour, features and eclectic clothing are hardly regarded as unusual these days by Aussies of Anglo-Saxon backgrounds.

A few hundred metres across Canterbury Road, one of Sydney's busiest arteries, is the famous Canterbury Park Racecourse, where such annual classics as the Canterbury Guineas are decided every year.

Originally developed round the Fern Hill Estate until the name was changed to Hurlstone Park in 1910, the suburb"s southern boundary is defined by the Cooks River and its straddling green belt which includes Ewen, Riverside and Beaman parks and a public golf course.
