Blackburn

Box Hill, one of Blackburn's neighbouring City of Whitehorse suburbs, was one of the favourite haunts of the Melbourne group of painters of the Heidleberg School which included Frederick McCubbin, Tom Roberts, Arthur Streeton and Charles Condor.

Flourishing in the last two decades of the 19th century, the members of the school, who were inspired by the work of the European Impressionists, established a number of camps through Melbourne.

Today their work and influence is commemorated in Artists Park, off Prince Street in Box Hill. The park's fun playground with an artistic theme honours the Australian Impressionists.

Whitehorse hosts a spring community festival in October and an Australia Day concert and fireworks display. The 408-seat Whitehouse Centre theatre is used regularly for the production of plays and concerts by professional and repertory drama and musical groups. The centre"s foyer is continuously hung with works from the city"s art collection.
