Mulgrave

A suburb in the recently formed City of Monash, Mulgrave is in the south-east metropolitan corner of Melbourne. The municipality is home to Monash University and its attendant research centres, the Victorian Police Academy and Waverley Park - a huge stadium that was designed to be the national headquarters of Australian Rules football but has not seen a capacity crowd for years. But while many footie fans might consider it football's consummate white elephant, the National Trust considers it worthy of heritage-listing. The region's environmental heartland is delightful Jells Park, a 127ha reserve laced by walking tracks, picnic corners and a lake which is a natural sanctuary for waterfowl. Those of a more artistic bent will be rewarded with a visit to the Monash Gallery of Arts. Open from Tuesday to Friday, the gallery is the guardian of one of the nation's finest collection of Australian photographs. The weekend Caribbean Markets provide a treasure-house for bric-a-brac browsers.
