Blackburn North

Modern Blackburn is part of the City of Whitehouse, one of Victoria's largest municipalities. Blackburn Lake, which was formed when one of the original sub-dividers dammed a local creek in 1889, is now at the heart of a magnificent bushland sanctuary, whose trails have been modified to provide disabled access.

Blackburn Sanctuary is one of 350 parks in a city of open spaces. One of the city's most enchanting link with the past is Schwerkolt Cottage and Museum. Built in 1864 by pioneer settler August Schwerkolt, the cottage has been restored and furnished in period style. The garden, too, has been recreated as it would have looked in the 1860s with scented plants, herbs and vintage fruit trees. The outbuildings include a stone smokehouse, smithy and underground wine cellar.

The Eastern Freeway, which forms the northern boundary of Blackburn, provides rapid access to the heart of Melbourne and all that elegant city has to offer visitors.
