Mount Waverley

Mount Waverley is a suburb in the City of Monash, which is not only Melbourne's most populous municipality with 161,000 residents, but, lying 20km from the CBD, is also close to the demographic centre of the Victorian capital. It is a cosmopolitan city with 37 per cent of its people having migrated from more than 30 different countries.

In Melbourne's fastest growing population corridor, the municipality is graced by some of Melbourne's best-known landmarks including Monash University, Waverley Park, the Monash Medical Centre, the Victorian Police Academy and Jells Park.

Parks occupy 600ha of the of 82sqkm city, while the Monash Technology Centre is home to some of Australia's leading high-tech research scientists.

While Scotsmen Thomas Napier and John McMillan might have pioneered settlement in this south-eastern quarter of Melbourne in 1839-40, an Irishman remains Monash"s most controversial resident. Justice Redmond Barry, who sentenced Australia"s most feted bushranger and folk legend Ned Kelly to hang during a celebrated courtroom verbal duel in 1880, owned two large properties in the parish - Syndal and St Johns Wood which is now home to the Riversdale Golf Club.
