Mitcham

A central eastern suburb, Mitcham is perfectly located as a base for the greater Melbourne adventure. Highways, expressways and the suburban rail system link Mitcham to the heart of Melbourne while the roads east provide easy access to such tourism gems as the Dandenong Ranges National Park and its Alfred Nicholas Memorial Gardens, the celebrated wineries of the Yarra Valley and the remarkable Healesville Sanctuary - a 32ha reserve protecting a large variety of native animals and birds in a natural bushland setting. Many of the native residents roam freely among their human guests. Standout in the Healesville program is the Where Eagles Fly program in which rangers and birds of prey combine in a magnificent display. A one kilometre slog to the top of Mt Saint Leonard to the north of Healesville is rewarded with panoramic, 360 degree views. Poet and master of vernacular verse, C.J. Dennis, lived and worked for 30 years until his death in 1938 from a nearby Toolangi home he bought with royalties for The Songs of a Sentimental Bloke. The cottage now operates as a tea-room and a C.J. Dennis museum.
