Vermont South

Twenty kilometres east of Melbourne, the predominantly residential suburb of South Vermont is part of the City of Whitehorse. The suburb flanks the Burwood Highway and it owes its name to a Government botanist named Von Mueller who dubbed it Vermont on account of its distinctive green hills.

The politics of colour, in fact, continue to have a strong influence in the municipality which has 550ha of open space, almost half of which is invested in bushland reserve.

Jewel in the green crown is the Blackburn Lake Sanctuary, one of the few remaining areas of natural bushland in metropolitan Melbourne. It is a haven for birds, animals, fish, insects and fungi and before embarking on the natural adventure trail you can discover a great deal about the park residents at the Blackburn Lake Sanctuary Education Centre in Central Road, Blackburn.

The past can be revisited at the Schwerkold Cottage and its attendant farm buildings in Mitcham.
