Heathmont

The nearby Dandenong Ranges present a wonderland for the visitor to the outer-eastern Melbourne suburb of Heathmont.

The national and forest parks protect 3000ha blanketed by a wide diversity of vegetation and fauna including the extraordinary lyre bird.

The entire region is generously served with art galleries, kiosks, gourmet restaurants, Devonshire tea shops and stunning views.

Famed in social history and folk song, the Puffing Billy rail line is close by, while a half hour drive takes the visitor to the fabulous Healesville Sanctuary and the chance to eyeball a range of native animals in their natural habitat including the reclusive platypus.

A suburb in the municipality of Maroondah, 25km to the east of the Melbourne GPO, Heathmont was originally covered by hedge-to-hedge orchards, and, despite the residential encroachment, has retained much of its bushy, village character with views over the hills to Mt Dandenong. Heathmont is connected to the centre of Melbourne by rail and the Maroondah Highway.
