Glen Waverley
Known as Black Flat in the days when this part of south-eastern Melbourne was the domain of farmers, orchardists, miners and wood carters, an early form of political correctness demanded a name change as the subdividers moved into the area.
After much debate, the residents and authorities settled on Glen Waverley, seemingly through some tenuous link with Sir Walter Scott, celebrated Scottish author of the Waverley novels.
Set in a predominantly residential enclave between Burwood and Princes highways, modern Glen Waverley is not only one of Melbourne"s more desirable addresses, but it hosts the Victorian Police Academy and the regional campus of one of Melbourne's most exclusive schools, Wesley College.
Glen Waverley is part of Melbourne"s most populous municipality, 30 per cent of whose 160,800 residents were born outside Australia. The council area extends over 82sq km and embraces 600ha of parks, gardens and reserves.
Two of the 125 parks lie in Glen Waverley - Hinkler Reserve, which is set in bushland and features a playground and walking track, and Highview Park, which includes a playground and picnic tables.
