Beulah

The town of Beulah is at the heart of the unforgiving Mallee-Wimmera region of north-west Victoria, where the dry-land farmers fight fire, drought and regular rabbit plagues as a matter of course.

Beulah claims that it's the closest town to the netting fence they built in the forlorn hope of containing the hordes of rabbits which have systematically devastated the Australian bush, especially round these parts.

The lovely Yarriambiack Creek near Beulah is a true oasis, with walking tracks and picnic and camping areas stretching along its serene banks.

Beulah lies 25km south of Hopetoun, the home of Edward Lascelles, who is largely credited with the opening up of the Mallee country.

The constant battle with natural and global economic elements are taking their toll on Beulah whose main streetscape features more "shop closed" than "open" signs. But the spirit of the Wimmera is still alive in the bar of the Vic Hotel where the locals gather at sundown to review another day in the bush.
