Quambatook

Three hundred kilometres north-west of Melbourne, the rural town of Quambatook lies in the heart of Victoria's wheat belt.

Throughout the land, however, Quambatook has been recognised for the last quarter of a century as the tractor-pulling capital of the nation. Although tractor pulling made its Australian debut in nearby Elmore, Quambatook has kept its foot on the pedal since Apex organised the town's first competition in 1976.

Within a couple of years Apex handed responsibility over to the Quambatook Tractor Pulling Association which has built the annual Easter event into one of the showcases of rural Australia. And down through the years some of the standout machines such as the Quamby Quaker and the Aussie Battler have become part of the nation's tractor and rural folklore.

Nearby Lalbert Lake is dependent on high flows from the Avoca River to fill its 500ha basin, but when the water is up the carp and redfin are on the bite.
