Warracknabeal

Black arrows point you to places of interest in the historic Wimmera town of Warracknabeal, 340km north-west of Melbourne.

Your first stop should be the Wheatlands Agricultural Museum where you'll see the grain growing and gathering machinery of yesteryear, including huge steam-powered chaff cutters, headers, tractors and the like, with plenty of well-preserved buildings.

You'll discover the gateway to Grampians National Park an hour's drive to the south. There are wineries here, too, including Seppelts', and it's not too far (in bush terms) to the Little Desert and Wyperfield National Parks and Lake Hindmarsh.

The town's name translates romantically to the local Aboriginal term for 'place of big gums shading the water hole'.

The Aborigines could well be referring to picnic spots and reserves built and maintained by members of Apex and Lions. The Lions Park features a fauna park framed within a bend on Yarriambiack Creek, an adventure playground and footbridge access top a nearby shopping centre. The Apex Park presents a picturesque, riverside walk to sharpen the appetite for a barbecue lunch.
