Woomelang

A two hour drive south down the Sunraysia Highway from Mildura and the Murray River, the small Yarriambiack Shire town of Woomelang is in the northern reaches of the Mallee Country.

Woomelang, in fact, is only half an hour or so east of Hopetoun, a town named for the original station from where Edward Lascelles carried on his long and eventually successful fight to win government support for his plan to open up the Mallee to grain farming.

Woomelang is also within a comfortable drive to one of Victoria's largest and most unusual national parks. The central feature of 356,800ha Wyperfield Park is a chain of mostly dry lake beds connected by Outlet Creek, the northern extension of the Wimmera River.

The lakes only fill when the river over-supplies Lake Hindmarsh to the south of Lake Albacutya. Thus, when the rains come, the normal, semi-arid landscape is transformed as battalions of dormant seeds sprout to carpet the ground with tiny desert plants and their flower clusters.
