Rainbow

Set in that sector of the Victorian countryside where the Wimmera merges with the Mallee, Rainbow is 340km north-west of Melbourne.

The regional pioneers settled on the shores of Lake Hindmarsh to the south of Rainbow, but the town"s star began to ascend at the start of the 20th century when it achieved railhead status.

Rainbow rapidly claimed the title of Metropolis of the Mallee wheatlands and, at one time, boasted a turf club, football, golf and cricket clubs, four lodges, a brass band, a Federal Store emporium, three hotels and an oyster saloon.

Such heady days have passed, but about 700 people still call Rainbow home and some National Trust-listed buildings remain as monuments to a rich past, while anglers, boating enthusiasts and water skiers are still answering the siren call of Lake Hindmarsh.
