Nangiloc

Your hosts of the Nangiloc Tavern, John and Vanessa Cox aren't your run-of-the-mill innkeepers. Sure, they pour the odd beer and listen to you grouch about the state of the local roads or the AFL, but they also collect and sort the mail and they also find time to take a grocery order on the dog and bone. The tavern is, in effect, the social and trading centre of the small, border-hugging Sunraysia town of Nangiloc in the far north-west corner of the state. Toss in the bowling and the footy club and you just about have the town covered, but the charms of Mildura and romantic Murray River cruises are just a few kilometres to the north while the serenity and bush-walking tracks of the Hattah-Kulkyne National Park lie just to the south. The southern bank stretch of the Murray River between Nangiloc and Colignan is a favoured haunt of boaties, picnickers, campers and anglers. The tracks that meander through the riverside stands of red gum and black box and their attendant billabongs are popular with bush-walkers. Nangiloc is 30km south-east of the major mallee centre of Red Cliffs which boasts Big Lizzie - an incredible, 45-tonne steel workhorse which cleared 1500ha of surrounding land.
