Manangatang

Halfway along the Mallee Highway between the NSW border town of Piangil and Ouyen, the small town of Manangatang is at the heart of sheep and wheat country. Manangatang was a convenient staging post back in the horse and coach days and some of the town's historic buildings are a mirror into the past. Today the town supports a population of 3200 who enjoy one of Victoria's most comfortable climates with an average summer temperature of 28 degrees and a mild mean of 15.7 degrees in winter. An hour's drive north from Manangatan lies the Murray River and Robinvale where McWilliams Wines' Lexia Room presents a historical perspective on the development of the industry in the region, while there is a Greek influence to Robinvale Wines' offerings. There are fish to be landed from the banks of the Murray whose local stretches are also popular with water-skiers. A comfortable drive west from Robinvale takes you to the Hattah-Kulkyne National Park and the chance to meet some of the local wild and birdlife on their own turf. The towns of Piangil, Tooleybuc and a series of lakes are within an hour's drive to the east.
