Red Cliffs

A northern Mallee centre of 5500 souls, Red Cliffs takes its name from the distinctive colour of the 70m cliffs which flank the eastern reaches of the town.

Fifteen kilometres south of Mildura, Red Cliffs presides over significant citrus and fruit orchards and vineyards nourished by irrigated water drawn from the Murray. The seeds of this model irrigation town were sown by returned World War I Diggers who took up land grants in the area.

The town's eyestopper is Big Lizzie, a monster engine which helped shape the region. The brain-child of Richmond engineer, Frank Bottrill, the 45-tonne Lizzie followed the soldier settlers into the region and cleared 1500ha of scrub to make the land farmable. She now rests in retirement in Barclay Square, opposite the railway station.

The town is a short drive from the major Murray city of Mildura which hosts such attractions as the largest vineyard in the southern hemisphere (Lindemans), Orange World and the Golden River Zoo.
