Donald

A police camp recreated from heritage buildings is the historical heart of the Wimmera town of Donald, 260 km north-west of Melbourne.

The original camp was set up by the town founder, Johann Meyer, in 1874 and features a lock-up and stables (1883), brick kiln and a shepherd's hut from the pioneering Donald family's founding property, Banyenrong, which was opened up in 1844.

Nearby Lake Buloke is in not only one of Victoria's largest lakes but it is also a significant breeding ground for waterfowl, especially ducks.

The smaller Lake Jil Jil also provides its share of game in the form of trout and redfin, which also attract their share of fish-eating birds.

And no visit to Donald is complete without a photograph of the famous bullock's head - an unusual, natural growth on a riverside box tree.

Wildflower lovers should time their visit to coincide with the spring show in the Mt Jeffcott Reserve where 4WD visitors can enjoy the panaoramic views from the summit.
