Mascot

Mascot is the long-suffering suburb that plays host to Sydney's Kingsford Smith Airport, about 10 km south of the CBD. A generation of householders, in fact, have lived in hope that a second international airport would take some of the pressure off their eardrums. But their dreams were dashed in a major upgrade of Sydney Airport to cope with the 2000 Olympics traffic and a subsequent announcement that there was little chance of a second aerial gateway being developed at Badgerys Creek in Sydney"s outer western suburbs. This congested suburb supports a lot of light industry, as well as high-density housing, and has been widely denigrated for not offering a more congenial face to first-time Sydney visitors who navigate its streets on the way into the city. It does offer an interesting face, however, now that it's such a multicultural place, with storefronts and restaurants proclaiming the wares and delights of a dozen nations.
